Strategy Kickoff

This interview allowed me to empathize with employees to understand their point of view when completing the payroll process. Time consuming, repetitive, and not user friendly, were the main pain points Ingrid experienced when using Google Spreadsheets. In this initial interview she gave great ideas for user friendly elements to make inputting information easier. Although this interview was comprehensive and very helpful in highlighting clear enhancements to the payroll processing, it was also thought provoking because I wondered how to account for customization. Each company has their own way of tracking information therefore it now seems unrealistic to standardize the interface for all companies. Can personalization be accomplished while also maintaining the goal of keeping the cost of the product low? While this question is not in the scope of this project, I did keep cost in mind as I made decisions.

Usability Study

I recorded Ingrid’s usability study through screen recording because I wanted to see her initial intuitive reaction to the tasks, I asked her to complete. Ingrid completed all tasks within 1 minute with minimal searching for how to complete the task.  I concluded that the app accomplished the goal of providing a simple way to submit hours to an employer. Furthermore, Ingrid also pointed out flaws in requesting time off. I neglected to add a field so users could request more than one day off. This iteration is shown below. I also added the suggestion for more drop-down menus, so the same information did not have to be typed in every time, making the user experience easier.
