Strategy Kickoff

Talking with Ryan allowed me to empathize with my target audience, an employer of a small business. This interview was very comprehensive and answered the necessary question I had about the payroll experience of a small business owner. Ryan explained his analysis of the pros and cons of the payroll app on the market as it related to his business needs, gave the reason why he uses Paychex, and why ultimately, he built his own app to meet his needs. The key take away pain points I received from this interview are the products on the market are too costly and overcomplicated.  This mirrored the conclusions I made after my competitive audit research, giving me the confidence and direction, I needed to start wireframing. Simple was the answer to both of his pain points.

Main Flow

In this segment of the interview, Ryan thought this flow was straightforward and contained all the necessary information.  He questioned how the information was entered into his account. “How did the task get populated? Did they do that, or did I do that?” I explained that the employees would sign into their account under employee and be directed to their main flow for submitting hours worked. With all his needs being addressed for the main flow, the interview moved onto the next task.

Employer User Task: Approve and Submit Hours

Employee User Task: Submit Hours

Disapprove

Ryan explains to me as an employer he is not allowed to edit employees' submits because of quality assurance purposes. Therefore, I had to rethink this part of the app to follow regulations. I changed the edit button to disapprove and eliminated the edit page of the flow. I also added a notification section to the employee flow so they could easily make the change and resubmit.

Schedule

Watch as Ryan expresses his excitement when navigating to the schedule section of the app.  He likes the view of the month and the subsection list view of what is going on in a selected week of the month. Again this task was easy to navigate to and complete.

Due Dates

In this segment of the interview, Ryan explained a helpful element that his current payroll app offers.  Paychek has a notification that tells users when the due date is for payroll submits to reach a certain check date.  I added this element to the homepage next to the submitted tasks.

Useful
Features

This video highlights what Ryan found useful in the app.  He explained how quick and easy the app was to use because of the following elements 1. Seeing the task that needed to be completed immediately 2. Having pictures of each employee next to their submit 3. Showing dates 4. The schedule views.  With this feedback, I felt I accomplished the goal of the project to enhance the payroll apps already on the market. These simple enhancements clearly made his experience more enjoyable.

Wow is the one I aim for."
